FAMILY Symposium to foster health, happiness and harmony in community

05/24/2012

To generate new ways to help families face modern challenges, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and its FAMILY project partner, the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), have organised a “Symposium cum Training Workshop - FAMILY Participation: Generating Evidence for FAMILY Health, Happiness and Harmony (3Hs) in the Community”.

Today (24 May), Club Steward Anthony W K Chow, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Raymond Young and HKU Council Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung attended the opening ceremony of the Symposium.

Mr Chow noted that the rapid development in our society in the recent years had given rise to many family discord cases. He said the Trust-initiated FAMILY Project is to tackle the many issues resulting from the stress and strain of life in Hong Kong by utilising a positive preventive and public health approach.

Internationally-renowned expert in community health, Dr Cynthia Boyd from the University of Illinois at Chicago shared her overseas experience with over 250 participants. During the symposium, FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Professor T H Lam talked about generating evidence for Family 3Hs in Hong Kong, while FAMILY Project Co-Investigator Professor Sophia Chan explained how to use community-based participatory approach for Family 3Hs.

Social Welfare Director Patrick Nip, Sham Shui Po District Council Chairman Jimmy Kwok, Government and NGO representatives, academics and medical experts held plenary sessions on how to promote family 3Hs in the community. A separate workshop is being held on 25 May to provide professionals from the social service sector with training on community-based participatory research.

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the “3Hs” through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at http://www.family.org.hk/.
