Jockey Club helps groom young football players

05/21/2012

Football has long been one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong.  In order to provide systematic training for young people and nurture talented players, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$5.55 million to the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) to run the Jockey Club Youth Football Development Programme over the coming three years.

Today (21 May), the Club’s Executive Manager, Charities, Florine Tang joined HKFA Chief Chairman Brian Leung and Leisure and Cultural Services Assistant Director (Leisure Services) Olivia Chan at the kick-off ceremony for the Programme’s Summer Scheme at the Hong Kong Football Club.

The Club has long been committed to grooming the younger generation.  This annual programme not only develops their sports skills, but also, more importantly, instils in our younger generation the virtues of sportsmanship, fair play, team spirit and discipline.  It is hoped more youngsters will participate in this programme this year.

With more than a 30-year history, the youth football development programme provides systematic training from July to October, attracting some 10,000 participants aged 5 to 19 each year.  It is divided into four stages, including basic football skills, advanced skills training, district and citywide competitions.  Limited enrolment in the scheme is now open on a first come, first served basis.  For details, please refer to HKFA’s website: www.hkfa.com

The Club has been a staunch supporter of sports development in Hong Kong over the years, having funded infrastructure developments like the Hong Kong Sports Institute, Hong Kong Stadium and The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course.  It has also made outstanding contributions to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Equestrian Events, 2009 East Asian Games, the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Equestrian Events and the 3rd Hong Kong Games, as well as the newly added futsal competition.
