Many students in Sichuan lost their chances of obtaining a proper education as their schools were badly damaged by the massive earthquake in 2008, bringing serious repercussions to the sustainable development of the province. Thanks to a RMB37 million donation by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Mianyang Youxian Zhongxing HKJC Junior Middle School has since been rebuilt. It officially reopened today (24 April), bringing new hopes to young people.
The Club’s support has made possible not only the reconstruction of the school's academic buildings, but also the provision of a sports ground and the purchase of new facilities and books, providing a welcoming environment conducive to the learning of more than 700 students. With barrier-free facilities added to assist young people left disabled by the earthquake, the school began student enrolment in the academic year starting September 2010.
