Jockey Club spreads message of loving families in Kwun Tong

03/17/2012

To further promote the message of health, happiness and harmony (3Hs) among families in the community, FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society and the Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC) have successfully concluded a 17-month 'Family Learning' programme in Kwun Tong District.

Since the project was launched in October 2010, the team has spread the 3Hs message to over 1000 residents of Tsui Ping (South) Estate, fostering mutual understanding among families and establishing a harmonious community. This was carried out with support from the Housing Department and the estate's Mutual Aid Committees, as well as the tripartite efforts of the community, academic sector and social service groups.

Today (17 March), the Jockey Club's Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined Kwun Tong District Council Chairman Bunny Chan, Social Welfare Department Assistant Director (Family & Child Welfare) Caran Wong, Kwun Tong District Social Welfare Officer Peter Ng, Housing Department Kowloon East Regional Management Office Chief Manager Brian Ma, FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Prof T H Lam and CFSC Chairman of the Board Prof Alex Kwan at the programme's recognition ceremony.

Throughout the programme's duration, the project team organised an array of family-based learning activities to promote the concept of family learning, the 3Hs and neighbourhood support in the community. Some workshops had organised to promote the “Eight Easy Ways to Love Your Family” – (1) Learn something new with your family, (2) Exercise regularly with your family, (3) Share your feelings with your family, (4) Communicate regularly with your family, (5) Encourage and praise your family, (6) Live a healthy life with your family, (7) Be content and appreciate life together with your family, and (8) Live a harmonious life with your family.

To ensure the benefits will be sustained, the team conducted Train-the-Trainers Programmes to establish a core group of 25 leaders, including members of the Estate Management Advisory Committee and representatives of the District Council. The training was designed to enhance their leadership skills and give them a better understanding of the concepts of "Learning together” and the "3Hs".

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the "3Hs" through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at www.family.org.hk.
