Jockey Club helps fight abuse against seniors in Kwai Tsing

02/26/2012

With the ageing population, there is an increasing trend for abuse cases against elders.  According to the Social Welfare Department, there were 273 such reported cases from January to September 2011, with Kwai Tsing District being one of the worst affected among the 18 districts in Hong Kong over the past two years.

To minimise the occurrence and provide timely support to related parties, CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors has partnered with Hong Kong Christian Services (HKCS) to launch a three-year community project entitled Elder at PEACE (Project to End Abuse with Collaborative Efforts) in Kwai Tsing District.

Today (26 February), the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined Elderly Commission Chairman Professor Alfred Chan, HKCS Chief Executive Suen Lai-sang, CADENZA Project Director Professor Jean Woo, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing District Social Welfare Officer Kok Che-leung, Kwai Tsing District Council members Chow Yick-hay and Tang Shui-wah to officiate at the kick-off ceremony.

Mr So told the audience that the Club initiated the project after learning that elder abuse had become more serious in Kwai Tsing, and had worked closely with the District Council and HKCS to tackle the problem.

Professor Chan thanked the Trust, CADENZA, partnering organisations and the members of Interdisciplinary Team for their support.

The Elder at PEACE project has set up a telephone help line for victims of elder abuse and related parties to provide one-stop assistance and counselling services.  The public and practitioners can also seek advice or refer cases if needed.  In addition, training is provided for practitioners to enhance their techniques when handling such cases and a series of community education programmes have been organised to raise public awareness of the issue.

The project’s Interdisciplinary Team comprises government officials, barristers, geriatricians, psychiatrists, nurses and academics.  With the multi-disciplinary collaboration, the team can provide professional advice and assistance in the legal and medical aspects so as to handle the cases more effectively and provide full support to those victims and families suffering from elder abuse, in turn minimising the occurrence of abusive incidents.

CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors is a project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of HK$380 million in 2006.  The project aims at nurturing academic leadership in gerontology and changing the mindset and attitude of the general public through a range of training and public education programmes.  Cross-sectional collaboration between organisations and the implementation of innovative elderly services and programmes are also encouraged in order to bring about a new mode of elderly care services to prepare for a rapidly ageing society.  Details of CADENZA are available at www.cadenza.hk.
