Trust-funded machines help improve quality of life of renal patients

02/23/2012

There are currently more than 4,000 patients in Hong Kong who suffer from end-stage renal failure and require dialysis treatment. To help meet the huge demand for dialysis service and benefit more renal patients, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$24.2 million for the Hospital Authority (HA) to acquire 100 sets of Nocturnal Home Haemodialysis Machines and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Machines respectively for the “HA Home Dialysis Programme”.

Today (23 February), Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li joined HA Chairman Anthony Wu and Chief Executive Dr Leung Pak-yin at the “HA Home Dialysis Graduation Ceremony”.

Dr Donald Li said that the Trust was delighted to sponsor this meaningful programme.  Patients’ quality of life could be enhanced because they no longer needed to travel frequently to hospitals for dialysis treatment.

“Over the years, the Club’s Charities Trust has made donations to promote healthcare projects and support HA in enhancing its medical facilities and other capital projects,” he said.  “As a long-term partner of the Authority, we also share same concern over the needs of renal patients.”

Mr Wu expressed his heartfelt thanks for the Trust’s donation.  “It assists renal patients to perform dialysis treatment at home safely by themselves without financial burdens.  Patients who join the programme will gain better clinical outcome as well as quality of life.”

With the Trust-funded machines, renal patients can receive blood dialysis at home anytime, enabling them to take up full-time jobs and improve their quality of life. Furthermore, the increased time available for blood dialysis makes the treatment three times more effective than treatment in hospital, which helps renal patients have better control of their haemachrome, blood pressure and phosphoric acid to strengthen their heart.

The Trust donation also covers training for medical staff, so they can teach admitted patients about the self-dialysis procedures.  It is expected that 200 patients with end-stage renal failure would directly benefit from the programme.
