Jockey Club spreads love-your-family message in Sham Shui Po

02/12/2012

To further promote the message of health, happiness and harmony (3Hs) among families in the community, FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society project team has collaborated with the Social Welfare Department and Sham Shui Po District Council to organise the Enhancing Family Well-Being Project in the district.  Through non-governmental organisations, community and school partners, the project aims to promote the 3Hs message to families in the neighbourhood.

Today (12 February), the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So joined Under Secretary for Home Affairs Florence Hui, Sham Shui Po District Council Chairman Jimmy Kwok, Social Welfare Department Deputy Director (Services) Anna Mak, Sham Shui Po District Social Welfare Officer Fong Kai-leung, FAMILY Project Principal Investigator Prof T H Lam and other guests to officiate at the launch ceremony.

Mr So said, “We are delighted to partner the Social Welfare Department in launching the Project in Sham Shui Po and thank the Sham Shui Po District Council and the 41 participating community groups for their support.  We also encourage the residents to communicate with their family members by sharing the pledge on well being.”

The Enhancing Family Well-Being Project is one of several projects run by the Shamshuipo Well-being Movement, a programme coordinated by the Social Welfare Department and Sham Shui Po District Council.  The Project promotes positive family lifestyle using the elements of positive psychology such as Gratitude, Hope, Resilience, and Open-mindedness.

The Project team will distribute booklets to residents giving tips for family enhancement, as well as train 80 frontline workers to better understand the project’s objectives and implement 30 programmes that will serve around 1,200 families.

The School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong will evaluate the project’s effectiveness so as to develop an intervention model for strengthening family wellness which will be published as a manual for practitioners.

FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society is a citywide project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with HK$250 million funding, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong.  The project aims to identify the sources of family problems, devise suitable preventive measures and promote the “3Hs” through a citywide household survey, intervention projects and public education programmes.  Further details of FAMILY are available at www.family.org.hk.
