Jockey Club helps upgrade facilities at special school

12/15/2011

To cater for the special needs of children with disabilities, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated over HK$9 million to upgrade facilities and equipment at SAHK Jockey Club Elaine Field School, to promote the all-round development of students.

Today (15 December), Jockey Club Steward Anthony W K Chow joined Hong Kong Institute of Education President Prof Anthony Cheung and SAHK Chairman Prof Leung Nai Kong to celebrate the opening of the upgraded school.

Mr Chow told the guest that he was pleased to witness the completion of the upgrade, and congratulated the school on receiving an award for the extension project, the Architectural Services Department Annual Award 2011 – Special Architectural Award (Accessibility). “The Club has supported SAHK by contributing more than HK$193 million in the past 43 years,” he noted. “It provides quality services to the needy so as to improve their standard of living.  The construction of Elaine Field School was also funded by the Club.”

Located in Tai Po, the campus was established in 1996 with funding of over HK$37 million from the Club’s Charities Trust. The recent donation has enabled the School to build a Jockey Club Dynamic Funland, a Jockey Club Sensory Garden, install air-conditioners in the assembly hall and dormitories, and purchase computer hardware, software and AV equipment, as well as provide a wheelchair pool and rehabilitation equipment.

The upgrade has also enabled the School to increase the intake of physically-disabled students and those with multiple disabilities aged 6-18 from 100 to 180, and accommodate up to 60 boarders in the dormitories. In addition, a trophy named “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Outstanding Student Award” will be presented annually to the most outstanding student.
