Jockey Club funds church social centre upgrade to benefit 6,000 young people

12/10/2011

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$3.35 million to meet the increasing demand for youth facilities in Kam Tin. The funds went towards upgrading the facilities at the SKH St Joseph’s Church & Social Centre and helping them organise support service projects. Over six thousand young people, living in Kam Tin are expected to benefit from the enhancements.

Today (10 December) the Club’s Executive Director, Charities, Douglas So, Diocese of Western Kowloon, HKSKH The Right Rev Thomas Soo, the Bishop-Elect of the Diocese of Western Kowloon, HKSKH The Very Revd Andrew Chan, Chairman of SKH St Joseph’s Church & Social Centre Rev Paul Tong and Yuen Long District Officer Yeung Tak-keung officially opened the renovated centre.

Mr So said this was the latest manifestation of the Club’s support for non-subvented services for people in Kam Tin. “Since the majority of services provided for young people are focused in central Yuen Long, we were delighted to help upgrade the youth facilities at the SKH St Joseph’s Church & Social Centre in Kam Tin. Moreover, the two-year training programmes featuring various activities for the youngsters can help build up their self esteem and encourage them to give a helping hand to others, as well as to develop a positive life attitude.”

The Club’s funding was used to renovate and upgrade the old facilities, including a basketball court, a two-storey Youth Centre, a pantry in the Community Centre and a Cafeteria (a social enterprise hiring local women), as well as to purchase a 28-seater minibus. It also enabled the Centre to employ more staff to organise various youth services, including anti-drug education, an adventure-based programme, as well as youth vocational training and basketball training for two years.
