Jockey Club funds revitalisation of Caritas Community Education Institute and Clinic

12/08/2011

Two heritage Caritas buildings in Tsuen Wan have been given a new lease on life with a HK$28 million grant from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The revitalised buildings, named as Caritas Jockey Club Institute of Community Education – Tsuen Wan and Caritas Jockey Club Tsuen Wan Clinic (Medical & Dental), will provide comprehensive medical and education services to the community.

Today (8 December), Jockey Club Steward Michael Lee joined Caritas-Hong Kong Chief Executive Michael Yeung,  Deputy Chief Executive Joseph Yim and Tsuen Wan District Officer Cheung Doi Ching at the opening ceremony of the Centre.

Mr Lee noted that the Club has been supporting Caritas-Hong Kong for more than 50 years. “As the city’s largest non-government charity donor, we are happy to support such revitalisation projects. By turning these heritage buildings into an integrated education and medical services centre, we demonstrate how rejuvenating existing resources can serve the community more effectively.”

Located at the junction of Chung On street and Yeung Uk Road in Tsuen Wan, The Institute of Community Education is now a modernised healthcare training centre equipped with a full range of facilities. Apart from classrooms, computer room and library, there are mock-up room with the latest medical equipment where students can practise their skills and become familiar with the working environment of an elderly home. The Institute will also provide professional training courses on healthcare and community and health education.

The adjoining Clinic will supplement its existing all-round medical care with new dental services for the community. Both buildings also introduced eco-friendly measures such as a green roof garden and use of wind and solar power electricity generation system, which help save energy and provide a comfortable environment for the users.
