Club to provide HK$3.5 million emergency relief to victims of Fa Yuen Street fire

11/30/2011

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has announced that it will offer emergency relief through its Charities Trust to victims of the fire that broke out early this morning at Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok.  Families of the deceased will be provided with a donation of HK$100,000 through the Social Welfare Department (SWD), while affected households will each be provided with a donation of HK$30,000.

The first batch of donation will amount to HK$3.5 million. The Club is prepared to meet the needs of the victims and their families and will continue to work with the Government and monitor the situation to see if further assistance is required.

"This was a very tragic accident and my heartfelt condolences go out to the victims’ families,” said Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson.  "As soon as we heard news of the fire early this morning, our Charities Trust got in touch with the SWD to establish what kind of relief assistance was needed and how we could get it to the victims as quickly as possible."

Mr Stevenson also expressed sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Jockey Club Emergency Relief Fund was specifically established in 2010 for the purpose of providing rapid assistance to victims of natural disasters, accidents and epidemics.  By providing a streamlined review process for urgent donation requests, it enables the Club's Charities Trust to respond more quickly and flexibly to those in immediate need.

“The Club will do whatever it can to help the families of the deceased and the injured during this sad and difficult period,” said Mr Stevenson.
