Club-funded international conference to foster crime prevention and offender rehabilitation

05/17/2011

To help offenders to re-integrate into community and reduce the chance of re-offending, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has funded The Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention (SRACP) to organise a four-day international conference on “Crime Prevention and Offender Rehabilitation” starting from 17 May at The University of Hong Kong.

Today (17 May), Club Steward Anthony Chow joined People’s Republic of China Ministry of Justice Consultant Han Heng-lin, Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee, China Prison Association President Fan Fang Ping and SRACP President The Hon Justice Pang Kin-kee to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Conference.

Mr Chow said the Club was delighted to be involved in such a meaningful conference again with the participation of more than 200 correctional service, judiciary and rehabilitation professionals from 15 countries.

“The Club takes a proactive approach to promote social harmony,” he said. “With the support of family, friends and society, in addition to suitable counselling, training and employment opportunities, ex-offenders are less likely to commit crime again. This will help enhance social stability and social harmony.”

The Trust has donated HK$508,000 to enable SRACP to organise the Conference in collaboration with the China Prison Society, the Centre for Criminology of The University of Hong Kong, as well as the Correctional Services Department, the Law Society of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Federation of Women Lawyers.

The conference, with the aim of formulating a common agenda to address universal issues on crime prevention and offender rehabilitation, has attracted considerable international interest, with more than 200 representatives from various governments departments and non-governmental organisations around the world attending the four-day event.

The participants are mainly involved in crime prevention, offender correction and rehabilitation, as well as professionals from multi-disciplines including judicial, legal, correctional services and social welfare. The Conference provides a platform for them to exchange experiences, look for new insights, strategies and directions to enhance the overall effectiveness of crime prevention and offender rehabilitation.  Further details of the Conference are available at www.sracp.org.hk/conference2011

The Trust has supported the Society since 1961 and so far has donated HK$44 million towards its services, including employment services for ex-offenders, a crime prevention and education centre, and integrated services for substance abusers.
