05/15/2011

Following its outstanding contribution to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Equestrian Events, 2009 East Asian Games, and the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Equestrian Events, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is this year donating HK$3.5 million to support the 3rd Hong Kong Games.

The biennial sports event aims to promote the culture of “Sport for All” in all 18 districts by encouraging the public to actively participate in sports, as well as to strengthen their sense of belonging to the district they live in and enhance community cohesion.

Club Steward Dr Eric Li Ka Cheung joined Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, Honorary Presidents of the 3rd Hong Kong Games Timothy Fok and Ip Kwok-him, Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Medallists gymnasts Yang Wei and Zou Kai as well as athletes from 18 District Councils to attend the 3rd Hong Kong Games Opening Ceremony on 14 May.

As the Principal Contributor of the 3rd Hong Kong Games, the Club’s Charities Trust donation covers Training of Athletes in 18 Districts, Elite Athletes Demonstration and Exchange, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Futsal Competition. It hoped to provide a good opportunity for athletes to compete and encourage more people to establish a positive and healthy lifestyle.

The 3rd Hong Kong Games is held from 14 May to 5 June with eight sports competitions – athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Each District Council has selected talented athletes within its own district to participate in the competitions, so as to encourage more people to participate and enjoy the sports.
