New HKJC TV series to be broadcast on TVB Jade from 1 May

04/27/2011

For many years the Hong Kong Jockey Club has contributed to the society in various ways.  It supports the development of sports in Hong Kong, provides a variety of volunteering services, assists in immediate relief efforts during natural disasters as well as launching innovative sustainability projects. All these efforts have confirmed the Club’s unwavering commitment and unfaltering dedication to the city's growth and social development.

Through its unique, not-for-profit business model, the Club has, for many years, provided Hong Kong people with world-class sporting and betting entertainment. At the same time the Club has donated an average of HK$1 billion every year to charitable and community projects.

To deepen public awareness and understanding of the Club’s many efforts and programs designed to help the needy with its donations and volunteer services, as well as its promotion of sports, a new ten-episode television series will be broadcast on TVB Jade, every Sunday at 7:30 pm, beginning May 1. We hope you and your family will enjoy it!

Building a Green Future

Over the past few years, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has initiated the promotion of Green Work within the organisation; for instance, the launching of 100% recyclable bet slips, the recycle scheme of retired betting terminals, introduction of solar powered carts, and implementation of carbon audit and various energy-efficient projects in the Club’s buildings. The Club also rallies support from Club staff and mobilises them to join various environmental campaigns. These include the recycling campaign of electronic appliances and books, and participation in the coastal clean up activities.

Trust-funded Environment Projects

The Club’s Charities Trust has pioneered a number of projects to promote environmental protection over the years. Examples include the construction of the Jockey Club HSBC WWF Hong Kong Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre which aims to promote marine education, and the launch of a glass bottle recycling project to encourage the principle of reusing resources.  These Jockey Club initiatives have helped pioneer new thinking on how to protect the environment in Hong Kong.

CARE@hkjc to nurture the youth

Youth development is always very high on the Club’s agenda as young people are the future pillars of our society. The CARE@hkjc Volunteer Team, which consists of some 900 Club employees and retirees, initiated a youth workshop which brings the teenagers to explore different districts in Hong Kong. These young people are also given a chance to experience some hard work in the stables and also have the rewarding experience of visiting the elderly. This gives the participants an invaluable lesson which helps to further enhance their social and personal development.

Supporting Equestrian development

The popularity of Equestrian sports keeps on growing since the successful hosting of the Beijing 2008 Olympic equestrian events. The Club has long been a strong supporter of the city’s equestrian sport development, and it funded the establishment of the HKJC Equestrian Team and Junior Equestrian Team in December 2008.

Benefiting from the programme, both teams were able to receive comprehensive training and they performed remarkably well in various events. What’s more, the Club also designed and built international standard equestrian venues for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing and Dementia

The Club’s efforts to address the needs of dementia patients and their families date back more than a decade with the establishment of The Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing. The Centre was the pioneer in providing a care centre specially designed for dementia patients. It is not only the first of its kind in Hong Kong, but also in Southeast Asia --- to combine day care, respite, outreach, training and research on dementia, all in one single centre.
