HK$10m Jockey Club gift opens doors to classic animated Chinese treasure

08/11/2010

The much-anticipated Hong Kong Jockey Club-sponsored "River of Wisdom - Animated Version of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival" Exhibition was opened today (8 November) by HKSAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang.  The ceremony of the exhibition at AsiaWorld-Expo was also attended by Jockey Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson, Stewards Anthony W K Chow, Dr Donald K T Li, Lester C H Kwok, Iain F Bruce, Dr Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai and Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges.

Mr Stevenson said the Jockey Club was honoured to bring to Hong Kong this state-of-the-art electronic adaptation of the Northern Song Dynasty painting, regarded as a national treasure in its original form, previously displayed in the China Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. "This exhibition will not only promote the public’s interest in Chinese arts and culture, but also demonstrate how the arts, culture and technology can be fully integrated." The Club's HK$10 million sponsorship covers part of the production cost of the event and transport to the exhibition for some 200,000 students, elderly and disabled visitors.

The Jockey Club Chairman noted that the Club had been a long-term supporter of local arts and culture, with donations totalling HK$1.3 billion in the past ten years alone. Continuous development of the arts community was assured when the Club funded the construction of the Academy for Performing Arts and the establishment of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. It has also supported various arts and culture activities, including The Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, as well as helping the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to perform at New York's legendary Carnegie Hall and setting up The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund to nurture talents.
