Club's reconstruction projects in Sichuan making good progress

12 May 2010

The Hong Kong Jockey Club's Executive Director of Corporate Development Kim Mak said at a photo exhibition on Sichuan's post-earthquake reconstruction today (12 May) that work was progressing smoothly on the four Club-funded reconstruction projects, which were the first phase of the Club's pledge to contribute HK$1 billion towards post-earthquake reconstruction in Sichuan.  Further projects for the second phase were now under review, he added.  The new projects would focus on education, vocational training, and rehabilitation facilities and expertise.

"The main construction work of the initial project at Mianyang Youxian Zhongxing Junior Middle School was completed this month and internal decoration is now being carried out," Mak reported.  "It will benefit some 1,600 students and we hope it will open in time for the new school year in September"

Organised by Sichuan Provincial Government, today's photo exhibition at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui marked the second anniversary of the tragedy. It was aimed at giving the public a better understanding of the reconstruction process.  Vice Director of the Information Office of Sichuan Provincial People's Government, Zhao Ying, expressed the Sichuan Government's gratitude to all sectors of the Hong Kong community including the Club for their support and contributions to the relief efforts.

The Club made an emergency donation and launched a public fund-raising campaign to support immediate relief work after the massive earthquake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, struck Sichuan in May 2008.  It also pledged to contribute a further HK$1 billion towards suitable post-earthquake reconstruction projects.

The initial Club-funded projects now under way are focused on restoring medical and education services, as well as assisting disabled young people to enrol at the schools.  They include the reconstruction and expansion of rehabilitation facilities at Mianyang 3rd City Hospital; reconstruction of the Mianyang Youxian Zhongxing Junior Middle School; and the construction of new buildings at Deyang No.5 Middle School.  The extension of Dujiangyan School to become an Olympic School will also benefit athletes from Sichuan province and bring them new hope.

"It has been two years since the Sichuan earthquake but the Club will never forget our compatriots in Sichuan. We are participating proactively in the implementation of the reconstruction projects in Sichuan," Mak stressed.

Through its unique, not-for-profit business model, the Club donates over HK$1 billion every year to charitable and community projects.  The Club has always taken the well-being of the community to its heart, responding rapidly to urgent needs.  The Club has given a helping hand to numerous relief efforts in the past, including emergency donations to help Mainland snowstorm victims in February 2008.

Following the Qinghai earthquake in April, the Club made an immediate donation of HK$2 million to the relief efforts and launched a public fund-raising drive at its racecourses, Off-Course Betting Branches, headquarters building and clubhouses, including Beijing Clubhouse.  It also pledged to contribute the net operating surplus from its race meeting on 21 April to the relief work.  In total, these three initiatives raised HK$18.3 million to assist the Qinghai earthquake victims.
