Club supports redevelopment of sports complex in Yuen Long

21 April 2010

The rapid development of Tin Shui Wai in recent years has brought about a sharp increase in the population of Yuen Long District, which in turn has led to greater demand for sports and recreation facilities there.  To help address these needs, The Hong Kong Jockey Club through its Charities Trust has donated HK$82 million to Yuen Long District Sports Association (YLDSA) to redevelop its 30-year-old sports complex.  The redeveloped complex, with an increased floor area and enhanced facilities, will effectively create a brand new sports and recreation venue in the district.

Today (21 April), the Club's Executive Director, Charities, Legal & Corporate Secretariat, Douglas So joined President of the complex's Redevelopment Committee Sir David Akers-Jones, President of YLDSA and District Officer for Yuen Long Yeung Tak-keung, Chairman of the Redevelopment Committee Wong Chung-chuen and other officiating guests at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new complex.

Noting that the YLDSA had long been playing a leading role in nurturing public interest and participation in sports and developing potential young athletes in Yuen Long, Mr So said the complex had been one of the major sports and recreation venues in the area.  "The redeveloped sports complex will be an important facility to serve the recreational needs of local residents, given the high transportation costs involved in travelling out of the district," he said.  "It will also encourage the public to participate in more recreational activities, so as to develop a healthy lifestyle and help build a more harmonious community."

Completion of the new seven-storey sports complex at Yuen Long Tai Yuk Road is scheduled for mid-2011.  With the total floor area doubled to 7,156 sq. m., the redeveloped complex will house a wide range of sports facilities to meet local residents' demands, including a fitness centre, a physiotherapy centre; multi-purpose activity rooms for activities such as dance, yoga and table tennis; a main hall for basketball, volleyball and badminton; and a gymnastics hall.  In recognition of the Trust's donation, it will be renamed "Yuen Long District Sports Association Jockey Club Complex".

The Club is strongly committed to promoting local sports development.  Over the years, it has supported the construction of numerous major sports and recreational facilities including Victoria Park, the Hong Kong Stadium, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, swimming pools in different districts and three public riding schools.

In recent years, the Club has supported and developed a number of other projects in the fast-developing north-western New Territories to benefit its residents, including SkyHigh Creative Partners, which is aimed at nurturing creative young talent; the TWGHs Jockey Club Tin Shui Wai Integrated Services Centre, which provides innovative community programmes and services tailored to the needs of youths in the district; and the HKJC Tin Shui Wai Telebet cum Volunteers and Training Centre, which has created many new job opportunities for local residents.
