Club pitches in to enhance HK's tourism appeal and celebrate young talents' creativity

10 February 2010

The Hong Kong Jockey Club today (10 February) unveiled its specially-designed float that will participate in the annual International Chinese New Year Night Parade on 14 February as a prelude to the Club's week-long Chinese New Year celebration programme.

This year's programmes, including participation in the annual parade, the Chinese New Year Raceday and the Equine Fun Fest, are aimed at sharing the festive mood with local residents and overseas visitors, as well as enhancing Hong Kong's appeal as a tourism destination.  By featuring a team of young talents in the parade, the Club is also taking the initiative to promote the creativity of Hong Kong's younger generation and salute their achievements.

Executive Director of Corporate Development Kim Mak said the Club was delighted to join the popular Chinese New Year parade for the 15th consecutive year, to underline its commitment to sharing the festive mood with Hong Kong people and showcase the city's appeal to overseas visitors.  "In supporting and organising these programmes, we aim not only at encouraging people to stay and spend locally, but also at helping Hong Kong enhance its competitiveness as a tourism destination by showcasing its appeal to visitors in the areas of sports, entertainment and mega events," he explained.

As part of the Club's continuing celebrations of its 125th Anniversary season, the Night Parade float carries the title of "Sports, Charities, Entertainment and Racing Ahead for You" and has been designed to show the Club's contribution to the city over the past 125 years.  A golden racehorse in full gallop on the front signifies the Club's continued efforts to drive the development of Hong Kong's horse racing and racecourse facilities to world-class levels, providing exciting and colourful entertainment that has become a favourite with visitors.

The float also reminds the world that Hong Kong staged the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 - a highly successful event for which the venues created by the Club were widely rated as the best in Olympic history.  Some sand pictures presenting the Club's greetings to the city, created by a young sand-painting artist, will also be shown on the float.

On the parade night, the Club's float will be supported by popular Club figures including jockey Matthew Chadwick, National Games equestrian gold medallist Patrick Lam and his teammate Samantha Lam.  They will be joined by a performance team of racing trainees and energetic young people from SkyHigh Creative Partners in Tin Shui Wai, a project funded by the Club's Charities Trust.  Mr Mak emphasised that the Club was delighted to provide a platform for these talented young people to demonstrate their creativity, and took a pride in showcasing the remarkable achievements made by these "post-80s" and "post-90s" generations.

The Club's Chinese New Year celebration will continue on Tuesday 16 February at Sha Tin Racecourse where the Chinese New Year Raceday will be held.  This will be followed by the Equine Fun Fest on 19 and 20 February at Sha Tin's Penfold Park. The Club's parade float will also be exhibited at both these events.
