Club-funded EAG volunteers recognised for their wholehearted support

28 January 2010

The 2009 East Asian Games held in Hong Kong last December fully lived up to their ''Be the Legend'' slogan by bringing local athletes a record haul of medals, as well as creating many lasting memories for participants and spectators alike.  Credit for this is due not only to the athletes and their superb achievements, but also to some 6,000 well-trained and dedicated volunteers, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, who ensured the smooth and safe running of the events.

Today (28 January), about 1,500 of the volunteers reunited at Queen Elizabeth Stadium for The Hong Kong Jockey Club 2009 East Asian Games Volunteer Programme Award Presentation Ceremony, organised to recognise their wholehearted support to the Games.  A total of 56 awards were given to volunteers who had worked for the largest number of hours.  Officiating guests of the ceremony included Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive The Hon Donald Tsang, Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Dr John C C Chan, Chairman of the 5th East Asian Games Planning Committee Timothy Fok and Chairman of the Agency for Volunteer Service Lee Jark-pui.

''I would like to express my gratitude to The Hong Kong Jockey Club again for their continuous and generous support to the EAG, without which the volunteer programme, being part of the sponsorship, would not be as successful,'' Mr Tsang Tak-sing told the guests.

As the Principal Contributor of the Games, the Club donated HK$40 million through its Charities Trust towards the costs of staging the event.  This donation encompassed the recruitment, training and support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club 2009 East Asian Games Volunteer Programme; the construction of The Hong Kong Jockey Club International BMX Park, the first of its kind in the city and a venue for the cycling competition; and the provision of 120,000 education tickets for local students to enjoy the Games.

In addition to the Trust's support, a further donation of HK$10 million was allocated to supporting the Games from the proceeds of The Hong Kong Jockey Club 125th Anniversary Sweepstakes.  A cheque presentation ceremony for this sum was also held at today's event.

In total, local athletes captured a total of 110 medals  -  26 gold, 31 silver and 53 bronze - at the 2009 East Asian Games, Hong Kong's best-ever result.
