HKJC organises CNY Equine Fun Fest to celebrate a festive 125th Anniversary with the public

18 January 2010

The Hong Kong Jockey Club will celebrate the New Year of the Tiger with Hong Kong people by organising an Equine Fun Fest on 19 and 20 February at Sha Tin's Penfold Park. The two-day event, promising great fun for the whole family, is part of the Club's programme to mark its 125th Anniversary, as well as a further initiative to promote equestrian sports and sports development in Hong Kong.

The wide range of entertainment on offer will include live performances by three-time World Vaulting Champion Christoph Lensing and his pupils, who will wow the audience with their gymnastics on horseback, and show jumping demonstrations by Hong Kong's National Games gold medallist Patrick Lam and his teammate Samantha Lam. In addition, the huggable Shetland ponies will be there to greet the children, some of whom may even get the chance of a pony ride.

Admission to the Equine Fun Fest will be by pre-booked ticket only, available free through on-line registration from 19 January (9.00am) to 1 February (11.59pm). Ticket allocations will be on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors to the Equine Fun Fest will be able to explore the charm of horses through three different zones in the park: the Love of Horses and Equine Sports zone, the Olympic and National Games Legacy zone and Racing as Sports and Social Entertainment zone.

In the Love of Horses and Equine Sports zone, triple gold medallist Christoph Lensing and his pupils will put on a spectacular performance of vaulting, a horseback sport that combines both gymnastics and equestrian riding in an art form. Patrick Lam, jumping gold medal winner at last October's 11th National Games, will also take part in the riding demonstrations with his teammate Samantha Lam, sharing their skills with some of the city's young equestrian talents.

The Club's Shetland ponies - an all-time kids' favourite - will be there too to meet young horse lovers in the Love of Horses and Equine Sport zone, while children aged between 3 and 15 can play a game to earn the chance of riding on a real pony and perhaps sow the seeds for becoming future equestrian stars.

For those interested in racehorse riding techniques, the Apprentice Jockey Wooden Horse Workshop in the Racing as Sports and Social Entertainment zone will be a must-see attraction where visitors can discover the considerable skills involved in the sport. In addition, they can compete with each other in the "Paddle Horse" and "Bouncy Horse" games, and even in a virtual contest, the "Horse Academy Family Jockey Wii Game". Featured in the same zone will be a 125th Anniversary Racing Legacy Exhibition at which visitors can relive memories of some of Hong Kong's finest racehorses of recent years through a series of film clips, including River Verdon, Fairy King Prawn, Silent Witness, Vengeance Of Rain. Good Ba Ba and Sacred Kingdom.

And to carry forward the Olympic and National Games Spirit, the National Games medals won by the Hong Kong Equestrian Team will be on display in the Olympic and National Games Legacy zone for photo-taking by visitors, while various Olympic legacy items will be exhibited including the Hong Kong's Olympic cauldron, the Olympic Mega Rings, an Olympic torch, Olympic equestrian fences and the fou drum that was used at the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Also not to be missed will be large festive decorations including the Club's Chinese New Year Parade float and a variety of horse-themed displays, guaranteeing a host of photo opportunities.
