Club funds new centre for self-help groups

10 November 2009

Recognising the limited financial and manpower resources of many self-help groups, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has donated HK$2.07 million through its Charities Trust to support the Self-Help Development Centre to renovate and equip its Nam Shan Centre in Shek Kip Mei.  The renovated premises provide about 230 square metres of floor space and are equipped with three activity rooms, three small offices, two store rooms, a computer training room and a drop-in area.  The new centre not only serves as a base for various local self-help groups, but also acts as a platform to encourage the groups' interaction within a common location.

Currently, four self-help groups have already moved in, namely Chosen Power, which supports people with mental handicap and their families; the Alliance of Ex-Mentally Ill of Hong Kong; the Mutual Help Association of Grassroots Families, which assists Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients; and Heart Navigation.

125th Anniversary of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

Founded in 1884, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2009/10 season.  Over the past 125 years, it has become one of Hong Kong's best known and respected organisations, providing the public with world-class sporting entertainment as well as being the city's major non-Government community benefactor, now donating more than HK$1 billion a year to charitable and community projects.  It has been a part of Hong Kong through good times and bad, sharing the city's growth and development with its people, and is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for future generations.
