Club wins "Hong Kong 100 years Classic Brand Award"

3 November 2009

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been honoured with the "100 years Classic Brand Award" in the "East Week Hong Kong Classic Brands 2009" awards, acknowledging its efforts in serving and building Hong Kong society over the past 125 years.  The award also recognises the Club as being an imperishable brand among Hong Kong people.  The Club's Executive Director of Corporate Development Kim Mak today (3 November) received the award from Legislative Councillor The Hon Mrs Sophie Leung.

"Hong Kong Classic Brands 2009" is an award presented by East Week to honour brands that were locally formed and have been established with a history of 25 years or more.  The Club won the same award in 2006.

Speaking at today's presentation ceremony, Mr Mak said the Club had witnessed many transitions in society since it was founded in 1884.  Through its unique, not-for-profit business model, the Club's surpluses were returned to the community.  "Over the years, the Club has stood by the people of Hong Kong in both good times and bad. We have participated actively in providing timely, multi-faceted support for evolving social needs," he said.

"It is always encouraging to know that our efforts to serve Hong Kong are recognised by the general public, and this in turn will encourage the Club staff to do even better," Mak added, promising that as Hong Kong faced new challenges in the years ahead, the Club's services would continue to grow with the community.  The Club's vision, he said, was to anticipate Hong Kong's future needs, so as to enhance the quality of life of its citizens.

Over the past 125 years, the Club has become Hong Kong's largest non-government benefactor, donating more than HK$1 billion a year to charitable and community projects both large and small.  In 2008, it was honoured with a China Charity Award from the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China to recognise its outstanding charity work.  The Club is also one of the largest employers in Hong Kong and its operations provide the community with substantial direct and indirect job opportunities.  Since its establishment in 1884, the Club is estimated to have employed over 250,000 people.
