Hong Kong - The Equine Capital Equestrian fun at HKJC Tuen Mun Public Riding School Open Day

16 May 2009

Around 3,000 local residents today (16 May) enjoyed a wonderful time at The Hong Kong Jockey Club Tuen Mun Public Riding School Open Day, learning more about horse life and equestrian sport.  The programme featured a wide range of carnival and equestrian activities including the final of an Inter-school Equestrian Challenge, a celebrity jockey fun race and a vaulting demonstration.

In the Inter-school Equestrian Challenge, local young riders received some strong vocal support from family members as they contested the grand prize of a one-week training package in England.  Visitors were able to see well known jockeys like Zac Purton and Brett Doyle show their "fun side" as they joined trainees from the Apprentice Jockeys' School in a series of mounted games on horseback.  A demonstration of vaulting, which is becoming an increasingly popular sport in the US and Europe, also had visitors wide-eyed with excitement.

As well as enjoying the equestrian competitions and demonstrations, members of the public had the chance to get "up close and personal" with horses by posing for photos with the Club's Shetland ponies, while younger family members were able to enjoy pony riding, the ever-popular bouncing castle and a series of games booths.

Through equestrian-related activities such as today's Open Day and other community outreach programmes, the Club is committed to supporting the development of equestrian sport citywide and enhancing Hong Kong's standing as The Equine Capital.
