3 May 2008

To raise public awareness about bowel cancer and its prevention, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has donated HK$16.1 million to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to launch a five-year "Bowel Cancer in Hong Kong: Education, Promotion and Screening" Project and set up the CUHK Jockey Club Bowel Cancer Education Centre.

Club Steward Dr Donald K T Li was the chief officiating guest at the project's inauguration ceremony held today (3 May) at the CUHK School of Public Health Building in the Prince of Wales Hospital.  Joining him at the ceremony were Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, Professor T F Fok; Director of the School of Public Health, CUHK, Professor Sian Griffiths; Director of the Institute of Digestive Disease, CUHK, Professor Joseph J Y Sung; Cluster Chief Executive (NTE) of the Hospital Authority, Dr Fung Hong; Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society Chairman Dr Ko Wing Man; Director of Operations, Hong Kong Cancer Fund, Ms Agatha Hu, and "Generalissimo" of the Peer Educators for Bowel Health Mr Alan Tam.

Dr Li said the programme would allow 10,000 asymptomatic people aged over 50 to undergo free faecal occult blood tests or colonoscopy. "We hope that through the educational programmes of the CUHK Jockey Club Bowel Cancer Education Centre, the prevalence and mortality rate of bowel cancer in Hong Kong can be reduced by a better understanding of the disease, its associated risk factors, its treatment methods and the means of prevention," he said.
