HKJC Scholarship celebrates 10th anniversary having awarded some 240 outstanding students

25 March 2008

Thirty tertiary students were awarded Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships at a presentation ceremony held today (25 March), in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and commitment to serve the community. The grant will support the academic expenses and living costs of the scholarship recipients.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship Scheme was established in 1998 with a donation of HK$102 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It will operate until 2008/09 academic year and aims to provide an average of 27 scholarships a year for local and Mainland students. To date, entering the 10th anniversary of the scholarship scheme, 239 students have been awarded the scholarship.

The 30 scholarship recipients for 2008 - 20 from Hong Kong and 10 from the Mainland - are all first degree students at one of Hong Kong's eight UGC-funded tertiary institutions or the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). They were nominated by their respective institutions on the basis of outstanding academic ability or talent, as well as active participation in community services. Each student will receive a grant totalling around HK$290,000 over the three years of his or her study to cover tuition fees, academic expenses and living costs, subject to continued academic excellence and participation in community services.

The Club sees the Scholarship Scheme as a unique way of nurturing young people from Hong Kong and the Mainland. It has also provided funding for graduates from the Scheme to establish the Jockey Club Scholars Alumni Association, which organises various community service programmes. Through supporting the Scholars and encouraging them to make good use of their skills and talents to serve the needy, the Club hopes to ensure that their commitment to contribute to the community is an ongoing process.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship Scheme has received high acclaim from the academic community. Attending today's ceremony were representatives of participating tertiary institutions, school principals, scholars and their parents, some of whom had travelled from as far as Shenzhen, Henan, Chongqing, and even Xian.

The Club's Chief Executive Officer, Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, said at today's ceremony that he felt very proud to see the Scholarship Scheme achieving such recognition. He had special words of praise for the Alumni Association's successful community project Schoolala, "which involves our graduates going into a secondary school and mentoring the students, not so much in terms of providing career advice as in encouraging them to make the fullest use of their skills, knowledge and creativity to explore new possibilities in their lives." Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges urged the Alumni Association to maintain the momentum and continue to serve the community.

What can be achieved through vision, goal setting and determination was amply demonstrated by special guest speaker, famous local singer and songwriter Lowell Lo, who shared his experience of how he had overcome a learning disability to achieve great success in the creative arts industry, and how he now gave back to the community by promoting environmental protection work.
