INTERNATIONAL WIN FOR HONG KONG OLYMPIC RIDER

16 May 2008

Hong Kong Olympian Kenneth Cheng was in winning form at the Danish Nations Cup fixture in Copenhagen yesterday. Cheng, who is one of a squad of riders sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, steered Felton Lee to victory in the feature 1.50 metre Grand Prix qualifier.

The 20-year-old Hong Kong born athlete, who booked his place at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Equestrian Events in Germany last week, galloped across the finish line in 68.2 seconds to claim victory from a 67-starter field.

Fellow Club sponsored rider Samantha Lam, who also qualified for the Olympic equestrian events in Germany last week, finished just outside the top 20 with Jockey Club Tresor. Lam had earlier steered the nine-year-old Coco to a third-place finish in the 1.45 metre speed class.

"It's fantastic news that two of the Club sponsored riders are going so well in the build-up to the Games", Hong Kong Jockey Club Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said. "Last week they qualified for the Olympic equestrian events and this week Kenneth is winning at a top international show. It's great news for Hong Kong."
