SECOND WIN FOR MALAYSIA IN WORLD CUP SHOW JUMPING AT BEAS RIVER

15 October 2007

Visiting Malaysian rider Quzier Ambak claimed the top points on offer with the only clear round at the second World Cup show jumping qualifier at the Jockey Club's equestrian facility at Beas River Country Club on October 14.

Ambak had posted the fastest time against the clock in the opening qualifier a week earlier, but had hit the last fence to drop to second behind his younger brother Qabil. But Quzier made no mistake this time, steering the 14-year-old gelding Calano to an easy first-round clear. When nobody else managed to leave all the fences standing, it was Quzier who claimed the win and its accompanying World Cup points for the South East Asian (SEA) league of the World Cup.

Hong Kong rider Jennifer Chang, who won the Malaysian qualifier at Kuang Rawang in mid-August and who is hoping for a place on Hong Kong's Olympic squad, was best of the home side in fourth behind two of the Australian visitors, Paul Athanasoff and Chris Chugg. World Cup debutant Jacqueline Lai slotted into fifth for Hong Kong.

Five SEA league qualifiers had already been staged in Malaysia when Hong Kong appeared on the World Cup calendar for the first time ever on October 7. World Cup action returns to Beas River on October 11-14 and again on November 1-4. As well as the feature World Cup class, both shows include other equestrian competitions and the weekend programme of events also has a carnival, including a bouncy castle, clowns, an equestrian sports exhibition and games booths, photo-taking opportunities with a miniature pony and rides in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage.

Free tickets are available (on a first come first served basis) from Angela Kong at the Hong Kong Equestrian Federation on 2966-5080.  Or you may also get the tickets at District Leisure Services Office of the Leisure and Cultural Service Department.
