Junior Mainland journalists visit Olympic equestrian venue

25 July 2007

A team of 100 budding young journalists from the Mainland today (25 July) visited The Hong Kong Jockey Club's Beas River Country Club to learn about latest developments on the construction of venues for the Beijing 2008 Olympic equestrian event and watch a show jumping demonstration.

All born in 1997, the youngsters were invited by the Hong Kong Tourism Board through the "10-Year-Old Little Journalist" programme.  They showed keen interest in horses and in the demonstration arranged by the Club's equestrian coach Tommy Kwan.

"Arousing the children's interest in horses is an important step in the promotion of equestrian sports," Kwan explained. "I hope there will be more activities of this kind in the future."

Apart from the Beas River Riding School, The Hong Kong Jockey Club runs three public riding schools that provide riding opportunities to the general public and people with disabilities.  About 2,000 local people regularly participate in different equestrian activities.
