Sir C K Chow to join the Board of Stewards of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced today that Sir C K Chow had been co-opted to join the Board of Stewards with effect from today (4 March).

He will fill a vacancy left by Mr Iain F Bruce, who retires at the age of 70 on the same date after three years of Stewardship.  In appreciation of his outstanding service and contributions to the Club, the Board has elected Mr Bruce as an Honorary Steward.

Sir C K Chow, who is 60, has been a Club Member since 2004 and became a Voting Member in 2008.  He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the MTR Corporation.  He was knighted in the United Kingdom in 2000 for his many contributions to British industry.  His personal profile is attached.

In welcoming Sir C K to the board, Club Chairman T Brian Stevenson said his wide international business experience would be of immense value to the Club in the years ahead.  "We are competing today in an ever-more globalised environment, which provides both opportunities and challenges for the Club in achieving its vision to be a world-leader in horse racing and Hong Kong's major charitable and community benefactor.  C K's depth of multi-national experience will be a tremendous asset to the Club," he commented.

Profile of Sir C K Chow

Sir C K Chow is the Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.

Before he joined MTR Corporation, Sir C K was Chief Executive Officer of Brambles Industries PLC, a global support services company with dual listings in the UK and Australia.  From 1997 to 2001, he was Chief Executive of GKN PLC, a leading engineering company based in the UK.  Before that, Sir C K spent 20 years with the BOC Group PLC (formerly known as British Oxygen) where he held various positions in Hong Kong, Japan, USA and the UK.  He was Chief Executive of BOC’s Gases Division and Managing Director of the BOC Group PLC from 1993 to 1996.  

Sir C K is a Chartered Engineer with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from The University of Wisconsin and a Master of Science degree in the same field from The University of California.  He holds a MBA degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and attended the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School.  He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by The University of Bath. 

In 2000, Sir C K was knighted in the United Kingdom for his contribution to industry.   In 2001, he was elected “International Executive of the Year” by the Academy of International Management.    In 2006, Sir C K was named the Executive of the Year in the DHL/SCMP Business Awards and he also received a Director of the Year Award from the Hong Kong Institute of Directors in the same year.   Also Sir C K was rated “the Best CEO in Hong Kong” by FinanceAsia Magazine in its Annual Poll for the years 2009 and 2010.

Sir C K is an independent non-executive Director of Anglo American PLC and AIA Group Limited.  He is the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, a Council Member of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Member of the Board of the Community Chest of Hong Kong.   Sir C K is also a member of the Commission on Strategic Development, the Standing Committee on Directorate Salaries & Conditions of Service, the Standing Committee on Judicial Salaries and Conditions of Service, as well as the Independent Commission on Remuneration for Members of the Executive Council and the Legislature, and Officials under the Political Appointment System of the HKSAR Government.   Sir C K is a member of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
