Jockey Club supports 3rd Hong Kong Games to promote !ĦħSport for All!ĦL in 18 Districts

25/02/2011

Following its outstanding contribution to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Equestrian Events, 2009 East Asian Games, and the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games Equestrian Events, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is this year donating HK$3.5 million to support the 3rd Hong Kong Games to be held in mid May.

The biennial sports event aims to promote the culture of “Sport for All” in all 18 Districts by encouraging the public to actively participate in sports, as well as to strengthen their sense of belonging to the district they live in and enhance community cohesion.

Today (25 February), the Club’s Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges joined  Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, Honorary Presidents of the 3rd Hong Kong Games Timothy Fok and Ip Kwok-him, as well as representatives from 18 District Councils and various sports associations to attend the 3rd Hong Kong Games 18 District Pledging Ceremony.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges noted that the Club has long been a staunch supporter of sports development in Hong Kong. Other than hosting of international sporting competitions, the Club initiated the building of sports facilities that are significant for providing the necessary training grounds for athletes. Examples include the Hong Kong Sports Institute in 1980s, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course in mid 1990s, and three public riding schools between 1970s and 1990s.

As the Principal Contributor of the 3rd Hong Kong Games, the Club’s Charities Trust donation will cover Training of Athletes in 18 Districts, Elite Athletes Demonstration and Exchange, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Futsal Competition. Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges says the various events will provide a good opportunity for athletes to compete and encourage more people to establish a positive and healthy lifestyle.

Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing expressed gratitude for the Club’s support of the 3rd Hong Kong Games to help promote the culture of “Sport for All” in 18 Districts.

The 3rd Hong Kong Games will be held from 14 May to 5 June with eight sports competitions – athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Each District Council will select talented athletes within its own district to participate in the competitions, so as to encourage more people to participate and enjoy the sports.
