Club-funded Hong Kong History Series ranked 10th Best Television Programme in 2008

3 March 2009

The Hong Kong History Series, produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) with funding of HK$3.8 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has been voted as the city's tenth Best Television Programme while one of its episodes - "Hong Kong's role in the 1911 Revolution" has been awarded the Advisory Panel Commendation Award in the 2008 TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey.  The Club's Executive Director of Charities William Y Yiu welcomed the public's recognition, commenting that "we hope this series has helped Hong Kong people better understand their local history and strengthened their passion for their home city."

The annual TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey is commissioned jointly by RTHK, Television Broadcasts Limited, Asia Television and Cable TV, and conducted by The Public Opinion Programme of the Social Sciences Research Centre at The University of Hong Kong.  By gauging the opinions of Hong Kong audiences on locally-produced programmes, it aims to enhance the overall quality of Hong Kong television.  The 2008 TV Programme Appreciation Index Survey covered 217 television programmes and interviewed more than 8,000 citizens.

The Hong Kong History Series, comprising nine episodes, was broadcast each Wednesday on TVB Jade from December 2008 to February 2009.  The programmes unveiled Hong Kong's history in a lively way, recalling historic landmarks, people and events from the city's birth up to 1949.  Computerised special effects were used to reconstruct historic sites and events, taking the audience back to Hong Kong's early days.  Photo exhibitions at MTR stations and public libraries, and a companion radio programme hosted by Hong Kong history experts were also organised to deepen the public's understanding of their local history.  All the television and radio programmes in the Hong Kong History Series can still be viewed online on RTHK's website, www.rthk.org.hk.
