Future riding stars participate in top youth forum

2 December 2008

Twenty-two racing trainees and two apprentice jockeys attended the Future Young Leaders Forum 2008 on 2 December to learn about the adverse effects of drugs and tactics for saying no to drugs.  They joined more than 2,000 students from local secondary and primary schools for the event held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai, which this year took the theme of "Say NO to drugs".

Participants from The Hong Kong Jockey Club included 12 trainees based at Beas River and 10 based at Sha Tin Racecourse, as well as apprentice jockeys Derek Leung and Keith Yeung.  Some of them voluntarily helped to distribute materials and decorate the venue yesterday and today.

The HKJC's Racing Talent Development Manager and Headmistress of the Apprentice Jockeys' School, Amy Chan, said this was the third consecutive year that the Club's traineess had participated.  "I feel this event can be beneficial to the development of young people from all backgrounds, and I hope they will better understand the harmfulness of drugs through the interactive programmes used at this event," she commented.  "I want to see our trainees become successful members of our society and outstanding ambassadors for their generation."

Amongst guests at today's Forum were Hong Kong's Secretary of Justice Wong Yan-lung, Permanent Secretary for Education Raymond Wong and Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong.  A highlight of the event was a talkback session with Wong Yan-lung, during which apprentice jockey trainee Silver Wong joined other students, teachers and parents in an open chat with Mr Wong, and came away with the clear message that resisting the attraction of drugs was the foundation stone for a healthy life.
