Club funds to improve facilities in recreational and integrated service for young people

18 November 2008

The Hong Kong Jockey Club, through its Charities Trust, has made donations to Caritas - Hong Kong and Pak Kau College to support three community projects in Cheung Chau and Tin Shui Wai. They are the Phase II redevelopment of Caritas Jockey Club Ming Fai Camp; modernisation of the Caritas Jockey Club Integrated Service for Young People - Cheung Chau; and the setting-up of the Jockey Club Success for All Centre at Pak Kau College in Tin Shui Wai. Opening ceremonies for all three projects were held on November 15.

Phase II Redevelopment of Caritas Jockey Club Ming Fai Camp

The Phase II redevelopment of the 44-year-old Caritas Jockey Club Ming Fai Camp at Cheung Chau was funded by a Trust donation of HK$11.29 million in 2006, subsequent to a HK$27.2 million donation for Phase I redevelopment in 1997. Upon completion of the Phase II redevelopment, the new dormitories provide a total of 88 hostel places, comprising 20 dormitories for four campers each and two dormitories for people with disabilities. The Camp, popular for school programmes, has also adopted a number of green, low-energy measures including solar landscape lighting, solar water heaters and a rainwater recycling system.

Modernisation of Caritas Jockey Club Integrated Service for Young People - Cheung Chau

A further Trust donation has made possible the modernisation of the Caritas Jockey Club Integrated Service for Young People - Cheung Chau.  The modernised centre is equipped with a play therapy room, an image design room and a teaching kitchen to cater for the leisure and job development needs of young people. It offers a comprehensive range of services to young people and the community in Cheung Chau.  The Centre is among the more than 80 integrated children and youth services centres across Hong Kong modernised with the Trust's HK$200 million donation in 2002, matching a grant from the Lotteries Fund.

Jockey Club Success for All Centre in Pak Kau College

To foster community development in Tin Shui Wai, the Trust has donated HK$5.27 million to Pak Kau College to convert part of its covered playground into the Jockey Club Success for All Centre as well as to partially subsidise the standard furniture and equipment costs of the College. The Centre, equipped with computers and furnished with a resource corner with books and journals, is open to parents, nearby residents and local charitable agencies to meet the need for communal facilities in Tin Shui Wai North through sharing school facilities with the public.
