HKJC salutes the heroes who gave their lives during both World Wars

10 November 2008

Hong Kong Jockey Club Club Chairman John C C Chan participated in a meaningful Remembrance Day Ceremony on 9 November at the Statue Square Cenotaph in Central.  This was the first time the Club has taken part in the ceremony to salute the fallen and to wish for world peace.

After the solemn two minutes' silence and bugle call, Mr Chan laid a wreath to honour servicemen, servicewomen and civilians who gave their lives during or as a result of the two World Wars. Other participants included Government officials, Executive and Legislative Councillors, judges, Consular representatives in Hong Kong, community organisations, veterans, members of ex-servicemen's associations, District Council representatives and uniformed organisations.

Remembrance Sunday services is held in many countries worldwide at 11:00 am on the Sunday nearest to 11 November, as this was the hour and date when World War I hostilities ceased in 1918.  The traditional two minutes' silence was first observed in the United Kingdom in 1919 and in Hong Kong in 1923.
