25 October 2008

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust's latest major community project "FAMILY: A Jockey Club Initiative for a Harmonious Society" took a further step forward today (25 October) with the opening of its inaugural symposium and training workshops. The Club's Executive Director, Charities, William Y Yiu was joined at the opening ceremony by project partners from The University of Hong Kong, Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Lap-chee Tsui and Dean of Medicine Professor Lee Sum-ping.

The symposium was the first of a series planned for the FAMILY project. It provided an opportunity for distinguished overseas guests, local experts and community leaders to discuss and debate strategies and interventions to promote Family Health, Happiness and Harmony ("3Hs") in the neighbourhood, in families, in media and in schools. The symposium was well attended by well over 230 representatives from the Government, non-government organisations and the public.

FAMILY, a citywide research and public education project, has been initiated by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong to help build a more harmonious society. Supported with a funding of HK$250 million from the Trust, the project will include a five-year household survey targeting 20,000 households in Hong Kong, with the aim of identifying sources of domestic problems. Preventive measures will be then be devised based on the results of the survey. At the same time, the message of "health, happiness and harmony" will be disseminated to the general public through various channels in order to enhance public awareness of the importance of traditional family values.
