CADENZA Symposium 2008 - Renowned experts share the key to successful ageing

11 October 2008

Jointly organised by "CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors" and the Faculty of Social Sciences of The University of Hong Kong, a two-day forum entitled "CADENZA Symposium 2008: Successful Ageing" was officially opened today (11 October) by Chief Executive Officer of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, Professor John G Malpas and Secretary for Labour and Welfare, the Hon Matthew Cheung.

The keynote address on the theme of "Successful Ageing" was delivered by Chairman of the Elderly Commission Dr the Hon Leong Che-hung, while four distinguished overseas guests and other local experts shared their views on various aspects of this topic such as social issues, healthcare, living environment, public health, law and finance. The symposium also provided a platform for bringing new insights to practitioners from the Government and community organisations.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges said that since its launch in 2006, CADENZA had organised an array of community activities, research projects and training programmes with experts around the world, NGOs, elderly carers and the general public, with the aim of revolutionising the way society viewed its seniors and improving the quality of care and quality of life for the elderly. Like the theme of this year's Symposium, 'Successful Ageing', we hope that both individuals and society as a whole can see ageing as an opportunity, as a celebration, rather than a problem or a burden," he commented.

"CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors", a five-year project launched in 2006, is supported by a Club donation of HK$380 million. The project is aimed at nurturing academic leadership in social gerontology and changing the mindset and attitude of the general public through a range of training and public education programmes. Cross-sectional collaboration between organisations and the implementation of innovative elderly services and programmes are also encouraged in order to bring about a new mode of elderly care services to prepare for a rapidly ageing society. Details of CADENZA and the Symposium are available at: www.cadenza.hk.
