HKJC funds educational programmes of The Ancient Olympic Games Exhibition to promote Olympism

2 August 2008

With the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games opening next week, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is funding a series of educational programmes designed to promote the spirit of Olympism and help the public gain a better understanding of the Olympics and their origins. The Club has donated HK$2.64 million towards the programmes, which will be run in conjunction with The Ancient Olympic Games Exhibition being staged by the Leisure and Cultural Service Department from 3 August to 24 November at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin.

The Exhibition brings together a valuable collection of over 110 exhibits from the British Museum's collection including sculptures, medals, and the famous Discobolus sculpture, The Discus Thrower, which has never been loaned to another museum or left British soil in the past 200 years before this year's Asia Tour.

To help the public, in particular students, benefit from visiting the exhibition, a series of supporting educational programmes funded by the Club have been specially created for this project. They include the Children's Ancient Olympic Games, in which children dressed in ancient Greek costumes compete in the sporting events of the ancient Olympics; English fun tours for primary school students led by a native-speaking English drama tutor dressed as an ancient Greek; bilingual workshops and guided tours for disadvantaged families, aimed at building up the participants' vocabulary; education kits and learning cards for primary and secondary students; interactive games and an exhibition handbook. In addition, free coach services and guided tours will be provided to schools and welfare agencies in remote districts such as Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Northern and Island Districts to ensure that as many young people as possible are given the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
