HKJC funds "The Deep" exhibition to promote conservation of the ecosystem

10 July 2008

With funding of HK$2.52 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, The Hong Kong Science Museum today (10 July) opened an exhibition entitled "The Deep" to introduce the little-known world of deep-sea creatures to the public and underline the importance of conserving the ecosystem. The exhibition will run until 12 November 2008.

Exhibits include photographs, film footage and preserved specimens of the great diversity of rarely-seen life forms in the deep sea. Using special light and sound effects, the pitch-black environment of the deep sea is recreated to simulate the conditions in which the animals live, allowing visitors to experience the world from a completely different dimension.

The Club's donation has also made possible a variety of supporting educational activities, including the production of educational booklets, leaflets and a special exhibition website to spread the message of environmental conservation. In addition, free coach services are being provided to schools and welfare agencies in remote districts such as Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Northern and Island Districts, to ensure that less privileged groups are given the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
