02/22/2018

To help local residents and visitors better enjoy the various art pieces of the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park which opened on Hong Kong’s iconic Central and Wan Chai harbourfronts today (22 February), Lead Education Partner the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is funding the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park Jockey Club Arts Education Programme. The programme encompasses fun-filled workshops and educational activities to bring the arts to people from diverse backgrounds and experience art creation for themselves.

The Club’s Executive Director, Charities and Community, Leong Cheung, was joined at today’s opening ceremony by Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong SAR Matthew Cheung; Head of the Art Promotion Office, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Dr Lesley Lau; Chairman of Hong Kong Arts Centre Nelson Leong; and Artistic Director of The Royal Academy of Arts and Co-curator of Harbour Arts Sculpture Park Tim Marlow.

Leong Cheung said, “Embracing the idea that arts should be accessible to all, the Club is honoured to support and present the Harbour Art Sculpture Park Jockey Club Arts Education Programme. Apart from providing a diverse selection of activities under this programme that contribute to local audience building, we are allocating resources to ensure that underprivileged students and people with special needs can learn, appreciate and enjoy the exhibition through specially-designed tours and learning activities. The Club has designated Arts, Culture and Heritage as one of its strategic focus areas, and will continue to support more world-class exhibitions and programmes, in its endeavour to enhance the cultural richness and vitality of our city.”

The displays being exhibited along the Central and Wan Chai harbourfronts feature sculptures by  19 renowned and emerging contemporary artists from Asia and beyond, such as “Pumpkin” by Yayoi Kusama from Japan and “DAZE VI” by Antony Gormley from Britain. The exhibition, which runs until 11 April, brings world-class arts to the public free of charge.

Under the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park Jockey Club Arts Education Programme, a series of guided tours, creative workshops, symposium and family-friendly activities is being organised, expected to benefit over 15,000 people. The creative workshops and symposium will be hosted by different artists to encourage interactions between participants. In addition, public and school guided tours will be conducted, with priority given to less resourceful schools in remote districts. Specially designed tours will also be conducted for visitors with special needs, including transportation support and accessible routes for wheelchairs, as well as accessibility tools to facilitate their learning. This will allow citizens from diverse backgrounds to enjoy the arts.
