Jockey Club launches a£á?Striding Ona£á? programme to encourage the public to take the initiative to embrace new knowledge and skills

07/20/2017

The Hong Kong Jockey Club launched the “Striding On” community betterment programme and its key activity “21-Day Challenge” today (20 July). The programme aims at encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to take on new challenges and to embrace new perspectives as the first step to self-improvement.

The Club’s Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges was joined at today’s press conference by Hong Kong’s queen of the velodrome, cyclist Sarah Lee, as well as Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) Council Member David Fong.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges said that the programme was inspired by a famous Chinese saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. He recalled the long journey the Club had taken to become one of the world’s top racing jurisdictions and one of the world’s top-ten charity donors. Nonetheless, he said, the Club would never stand still, but would constantly improve its performance so it can keep fulfilling its purpose of working for the betterment of society.

He also reflected on Hong Kong’s positive “can do” spirit, and how its citizens always looked for new challenges.  “That’s why we are launching our ‘Striding On’ programme today to provide new challenges which will help participants to reboot their ‘can do’ spirit,” he concluded.

To be rolled out in two stages, the first phase of the “Striding On” programme is themed around sports and healthy living and is led by three renowned icons, including the first female world champion cyclist from Hong Kong, Sarah Lee, world-class boxer Rex Tso, and champion jockey Joao Moreira. All of them had faced many ups and downs in their careers, but have come out stronger and better through dedication and determination. In phase two, a number of well-known local artists will jump on the bandwagon to encourage people to take their first step towards self-improvement.

At today’s press conference, details regarding the programme’s key activity – “21-Day Challenge” – were announced.  This online initiative will run from today until the end of December. In phase one, the three sporting icons will, as “mentors”, be encouraging participants through all online coaching lessons and tasks under three areas of challenges, namely building up leg muscles, working-out at home, and healthy eating.

Appearing at the event, Sarah, who will lead the first of the three challenges to help participants power up their lower body and boost endurance, shared her heart-touching, road to success story through an inspirational video, which was screened for the first time today.

Also showing support were celebrities, including multimedia producer and presenter Ng Ka-him, Hong Kong champion body builder Lisa Cheng, and actress and singer Kandy Wong, who helped demonstrate some physical tasks of the “21-Day Challenge” together with Sarah.

Apart from embracing new skills and knowledge, participants will also be benefiting the community, which echoes the Club’s spirit of “progressing together for a better future” with the community. The Club will make a donation to UNICEF HK amounting to HK$365 per person if the whole challenge is successfully completed.

UNICEF HK Council Member David Fong expressed his gratitude to the Club for initiating this meaningful community programme to motivate Hong Kong citizens of all ages and backgrounds to embark on a new journey for acquiring knowledge and skills. “We believe the ‘Striding On’ programme will help bring a positive difference to the community and we are particularly thankful for The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s donation to support UNICEF HK’s projects,” he said.
