Club ceremony praises support from Food and Health Bureau, Korean Consulate

09/27/2016

The Hong Kong Jockey Club welcomed officials of the Food and Health Bureau (FHB), Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong to commemorate today the successful agreement of a bilateral protocol between Hong Kong and Korea on horse movement. Mr. Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chief Executive Officer of the Club led the ceremony, presenting a token of appreciation to Mrs. Cherry Tse, Permanent Secretary of the FHB, on behalf of the AFCD, and a souvenir to the Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Kim Kwang Dong.

“We are most thankful for the tremendous support we have received from the Food and Health Bureau, and specifically the AFCD, along with the coordination between our jurisdictions as overseen by the Korean Consulate, in establishing the bilateral protocol for temporary movement of horses between Hong Kong and Korea,” said Mr. Engelbrecht-Bresges. “Their colleagues from Korea have been equally helpful, and the result of this diligence was a momentous occasion for Hong Kong racing as our first horse to make the journey to Seoul, Super Jockey, was a convincing winner of the inaugural Korea Sprint.

“The Club has a long history of traveling its horses overseas to contest some of the world’s premier races,” said Mr. Andrew Harding, Executive Director, Racing Authority, “and the race meeting held in Korea on 11 September is symbolic of their growing status as a racing jurisdiction. Hong Kong was one of seven foreign jurisdictions to participate alongside Korea’s emerging equine talent, and there is no doubting their determination to become a significant international force in the sport.”

“Super Jockey’s success bodes well for the future as we anticipate select Hong Kong horses will compete in this event in the future,” added Mr. Engelbrecht-Bresges. “As racing in Korea continues to grow, we are hopeful of greater collaboration in the future.”
