Club funds heritage site illuminations to enhance art accessibility for all

07/22/2016

To enhance art accessibility for all, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting the first Lumières Hong Kong light show in November as its Major Contributor. An inspiring array of multimedia installations will be projected across nine heritage buildings in Central District on the nights of 18 to 20 November. Various free supporting activities will help residents and visitors from all backgrounds discover more about the city and its fascinating history.

The Club is again working with the Association Culturelle France Hong Kong, its major partner in the Le French May festival, to bring this art extravaganza to Hong Kong. “Together with the accompanying live performances and art installations, this spectacular illumination of nine of Central’s heritage sites will be a true festival of the district’s history, as well as of its modern vibrancy,” commented Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Dr Simon S O Ip at a preview cocktail party for the project yesterday (21 July).

Also attending yesterday’s preview cocktail party were Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam, Consul-General of France in Hong Kong and Macau Eric Berti, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Gregory So, Chairman of the Mega Events Fund Jeffrey Lam, Chairman of the Association Culturelle France Hong Kong Andrew Yuen, and Founder and Project Co-ordinator of Lumières Hong Kong Julien-Loïc Garin.

The Club’s donation of over HK$10 million covers the production costs of the lighting installations and projections as well as the Jockey Club Lumières Hong Kong Education Outreach Programme, which is aimed at developing public interest in arts and culture. The outreach programme will involve various youth and education organisations such as Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups to cultivate the young generation’s creativity and their awareness of local heritage conservation. They will demonstrate their talents in a light parade, performance and art installation. The programme will also include interactive smartphone apps illustrating the sites’ history, and docent tours for the disadvantaged. Some 400,000 visitors are expected to watch the three-night show while the outreach programme will benefit over 50,000 students. For more information, please visit: http://lumiereshk.com/.

Over the past decade, the Club has put strong emphasis on cultivating arts and culture, with its total donations to such projects reaching well over HK$3.1 billion.
