Primary school children in Northeast China receive an e-learning boost thanks to the Cluba£į?s computer recycle and donation programme

06/03/2016

Seven hundred students and teachers of Jilin Yong Ji No. 2 Experimental Primary School will now be able to enjoy the benefits of e-learning thanks to the donation of sixty computers by The Hong Kong Jockey Club under its Retired Computer Recycle and Donation Programme, a pilot programme to donate used Club computers in Mainland China. The donation reflects the Club’s long-standing support for sustainability and social development.

The donated computers come from Shenzhen HKJC Technology Development Limited, a technology subsidiary of the Club. All are still in good working condition and have been re-licensed and re-programmed for use by students and teachers. IT engineers from the Club’s subsidiary went to the school to help with onsite installation.

The Chinese Government has established a computer to primary student ratio of 7.5 computers per 100 students. The Club’s Retired Computer Recycle and Duration   Programme will therefore help the No. 2 Primary School well exceed the national target.

A donation ceremony was recently held at the school. Officiating guests included General Manager, Shenzhen HKJC Technology Development Limited Boyd Gu; Executive Manager, Sustainability, Shirlee Algire; Party Secretary, Yongji County Education Bureau Li Shuyan; Deputy Director, Yongji County Education Bureau Zhang Fuyu and Principal, Jilin Yong Ji No. 2 Experimental Primary School Jiang Yong.

Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Gu said, “With the fast development of our company and the rapid development of IT technology, the equipment we purchased in the past can no longer support the needs of our operation. Therefore, we have sought out a new use for our computers and users who can benefit from them. The Retired Computer Recycle and Donation Programme exemplifies our determination to be a good corporate citizen in Mainland China. I hope this computer donation will make a big difference to the school’s teaching and learning experience, office administration and also help connect students with the outside world.”

Mrs. Algire in her speech to students highlighted the Programme as a fine example of low-carbon practice and responsible action to reuse materials and save resources. “Both the Club and the school believe technology and education can nurture future leaders for a greener tomorrow. These retired computers will now have their second life with you. A life with a purpose more valuable perhaps –as they are now tools to improve learning and help prepare you with the skills you will need to thrive in the future.”

School principal Mr. Jiang thanked the Club for its generosity. He said: “Both our students and teachers are all eager to study IT and connect with the outside world. Our school however lacks computers for teaching and learning. This has severely hampered our teaching and learning as well as our daily school administration. We are grateful to the Club for its kind donation. We will make good use of the computers and will not fail to live up to the Club’s expectations.”
