Recognising the importance of problem solving and logical thinking in providing young people with skills that can improve their digital readiness and equip them for the ever-changing 21st-century world, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has initiated the “Coding Education for Primary Schools” programme with three overseas and local universities as co-creators – The Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and City University of Hong Kong – and the Education Bureau as a supporting organisation.
The four-year programme, funded by the Trust with a donation of HK$216 million, is targeted at equipping over 16,000 upper primary students from 32 local schools with the basic coding capabilities to strengthen their computational thinking abilities by:
- developing their fundamental programming knowledge;
- reinforcing their logical thinking and problem solving skills;
- creating interest and motivation among them for further learning; and
- building the capacity of their teachers through training and evidence-based teaching materials.
