Jockey Club helps fund new headquarters for Red Cross

03/01/2016

To enable the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) to expand its services, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has donated HK$80 million to support the partial cost of the HKRC's new headquarters building. Located in Hoi Ting Road, West Kowloon, the new headquarters will be developed into a one-stop humanitarian platform in order to provide timely assistance for more people in need.

Today (1 March), Club Steward the Hon Sir C K Chow joined HKSAR Chief Executive C Y Leung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung, HKRC President The Hon Sir Ti Liang Yang and President of the Red Cross Society of China Chen Zhu at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Red Cross New Headquarters Building.

The eleven-storey building provides a wide range of service units under one roof including a blood donor centre, a first aid and healthcare training centre, a volunteer development and activities centre, a humanitarian education centre, the overseas and local disaster relief materials handling centre, the Red Cross Youth West Kowloon Divisional Headquarters and the Jockey Club Convention Hall.

The services offered by the new headquarters are expected to benefit more than 440,000 residents every year, including the sick, disaster victims, the disabled and the financially deprived.  The building will also provide upgraded facilities for HKRC staff, helping them provide timely services in disaster situations, and will strengthen community involvement by enabling more youth and volunteer programmes to be organised.

The Club has been a close partner of the HKRC since 1951, making total donations of over HK$215 million to date to support a variety of projects.  Examples include the construction of a new footbridge at the HKRC John F Kennedy Centre; reprovision of the HKRC Princess Alexandra School boarding section; and the Uniformed Group Leaders and Trainers Development Project under a Community Project Grant from the Trust.
