Jockey Club funds expansion of Hong Kong's largest purpose-built rehab complex

11/30/2015

The Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex in Aberdeen, Hong Kong’s first and still largest purpose-built rehabilitation complex run by The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), is expanding its services after a major renovation and a new two-storey extension to boost capacity – made possible by continuing support from The Hong Kong Jockey Charities Trust with a donation of over HK$91 million.

Today (30 November), Club Steward Dr Eric Li Ka Cheung joined Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen and TWGHs Chairman Maisy Ho to perform the opening of the TWGHs Jockey Club Tsin Shing Day Activity Centre cum Hostel (II) and TWGHs Jockey Club Academy of Community Rehabilitation. These two new facilities will create an additional 75 residential places for people aged 15 or above with low moderate to severe grade of intellectual disability in the Hostel and 75 training places for their carers in the Day Activity Centre, as well as providing professional training for 4,000 rehab personnel, volunteers and carers annually in the Academy of Community Rehabilitation.

Dr Li told the guests that the Club would continue to support the development of rehabilitation services, saying the TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex was dedicated to providing quality facilities and services as well as continuous improvement.  “The Club will continue to work closely with TWGHs for the betterment of life of people with intellectual disability, so as to unleash their potential to live an abundant life,” he emphasised.

The Trust’s support for the Group’s Aberdeen centre began 21 years ago with a HK$178 million donation to redevelop the premises, which then became known as the TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex. In 2009, it provided a further HK$27.47 million to cover major repairs and renovation to the complex after years of heavy usage.  At the same time, the Trust approached the Government and various NGOs to discuss possible solutions to the problem of long waiting lists among the mentally disabled, as a result of which it decided to support the extension proposal by TWGHs in 2011.  Including the latest donation for the extension project, the Trust’s total contributions to the Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex now exceed HK$296 million.

The extension project has involved the construction of two additional storeys to Block A of the existing complex, creating additional floor area of 2,900 square metres to accommodate a day activity centre and hostel for people with intellectual disability, as well as a training centre to meet an upsurge in demand for such services.

Facilities at the new TWGHs Jockey Club Tsin Shing Day Activity Centre cum hostel (II), which provides daily living skills training for its users, include an art room, physical and occupational therapy training rooms, and a hanging garden.  Complementing this, the TWGHs Jockey Club Academy of Community Rehabilitation provides training for rehab personnel and carers through experience programmes, courses and workshops.  Over 1,000 people have already been trained there since it commenced services in April.

Apart from supporting this project, the Club actively collaborates with community organisations and NGOs to help them provide timely rehabilitation support services for the mentally handicapped.  Recent examples include a donation of HK$600 million to the Hong Chi Association for its development project in Pinehill Village for people with intellectual disabilities, the Club’s largest-ever single donation in the rehabilitation sector; the renovation of a hostel and workshop for Caritas-Hong Kong; and support for the Parents’ Association of Pre-School Handicapped Children under a Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant, which enhances mutual support and solidarity among families in need.
