10/05/2015

The Hong Kong Jockey Club N-League, the city’s first district-based inter-school girls football tournament was launched today (5 October) as the latest in a series of Club initiatives to promote youth football across Hong Kong. Cheering the girls on was Manchester United legend Bryan Robson.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Club’s Executive Director of Corporate Business Planning and Communications Scarlette Leung said that the HKJC N-League is an important milestone in the development of football at the youth level. “It is the aim of the Jockey Club to bring a positive impact to the physical, mental and social development of our younger generation, to bring them new opportunities and inspire them to pursue their dreams.”

Seven girls teams from secondary schools in North District will join the first HKJC N-League, playing against each other both at home and away over the next eight months. The final will be played on 7 May 2016, where, in addition to the champion’s trophy, individual awards including the Most Valuable Player and the Top Scorer will be presented. The HKJC N-League is organised by Woofoo Social Enterprises and co-organised by the North District Sports Association with the Club as title sponsor and the Hong Kong Football Association providing support.

Before the launch ceremony, Bryan Robson, one of the most influential footballers during the 1980s and 1990s, nicknamed “Captain Marvel” for his performances for both England and MU, visited Christ College, Sha Tin, one of the schools participating in the Jockey Club School Football Development Scheme. During the visit Mr Robson joined small-sided matches with students and teachers.

The Jockey Club is a long-time supporter of local football development. Since 2012 it has been collaborating with Manchester United on four programmes designed to develop the life, leadership and sporting skills of young people, namely the JC Elite Youth Football Camp, the JC School Football Development Scheme, the JC Youth Football Leadership Scheme and the JC Youth Football Fitness Assessment. The Club also supports the Jockey Club Youth Football Development Scheme, whose summer scheme is the largest such programme in Hong Kong. Most recently, in August, the Club announced a HK$120 million donation to support the Jockey Club HKFA 5-Year Football Development Programme, which aims to promote football across the community, including futsal and women’s football. In terms of infrastructure, the Club has supported the construction of the recently opened Jockey Club Kitchee Centre. And having rebuilt Hong Kong Stadium in the 1990s as a home for Hong Kong’s major domestic and international football games, the Club has recently funded and provided expert advice for the construction of its new grass surface.
