Jockey Club injects new funding to extend youth football summer programme for five years

06/08/2015

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has been supporting the Summer Scheme of Jockey Club Youth Football Development Programme since 2010, making it the city’s largest youth football programme. In view of the positive response, the Trust is expanding its role to become the Scheme’s ‘Major Partner’ by injecting new funding of almost HK$19 million to support the programme for a further five years until 2020. An additional 50,000 young people can take part, helping to establish a stronger base for youth football in Hong Kong.

Today (8 June), the Club’s Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges was joined by Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) Chairman Brian Leung, Chief Executive Officer Mark Sutcliffe and Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) Assistant Director (Leisure Services) Richard Wong at the press conference.

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges noted that the Club has contributed HK$366 million to the hardware and software of football over the last decade. Going forward, the Club will continue to support football development in Hong Kong. He said the Club wanted to develop youth footballing skills and also to use football to build young people’s strength of character through participation in team sport. Through promoting ‘Sports for Hope’, one of the Trust’s three areas of strategic focus over the next few years, the Club would like to use sports to create lifelong positive values and hope in Hong Kong society.

The Summer Scheme is organised by the HKFA, subvented by the LCSD and funded by the Club’s Charities Trust as the Major Partner. It will run from July to August, and is open to both boys and girls aged 4 to 17. For details, please visit the HKFA’s website: www.hkfa.com.

The Club has long been committed to football development in Hong Kong. Apart from funding the construction of infrastructure such as the Jockey Club Kitchee Centre in Sha Tin and the redevelopment of the South China Athletic Association grandstand and football pitch, it has also partnered Manchester United to launch a series of innovative youth football projects, with the objective of inspiring young football players to develop their full potential in terms of their sporting, social and leadership skills.
