Jockey Club funds Guinness World Record exhibition with 10,000 horse sculptures

04/02/2015

Inspired by the “Galloping Horse” painting by Master Chinese artist Xu Beihong, whose brush strokes capture the untamed grace and power of the horse, a nearly 10,000 square meters art installation composed of over 10,000 papier mache eco-horse sculptures has been created by young people, local artists and community leaders to establish a Guinness World Record of “The largest display of recycled paper animal sculptures”.

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the HKFYG Jockey Club “Ten Thousand Galloping Horses, United With One Heart” Installation Art and Education Project was organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) in collaboration with Xu Beihong Art Committee. The exhibition will go on display at the HKJC Community Festival in Sha Tin Racecourse from 3 to 5 April to celebrate the Club’s 130th Anniversary.

Today (2 April), Club Deputy Chairman Anthony W K Chow joined Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam, Legislative Council President Tsang Yok-sing, Director of The Youth Department of the Central Government’s Liaison Office in the HKSAR Chen Lin, Chairman of the Jiazi Society of Calligraphy Dr Ambrose So, Chairman of World Eye Organization Dr Dominic Lam, Secretary General of Xu Beihong Arts Committee Michael Liao, Principal of Hong Kong Design Institute Leslie Lu Lam, HKFYG President Lester Huang and Executive Director Dr Rosanna Wong to officiate at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Mr Chow said the Club was honoured to support the project with a HK$4 million donation. “The exhibition will enable the public to have a view of the original works created by Master Xu, while the Club-funded education programmes, including 3D creative and animation workshops, will allow 2,000 young people to get to know more about art and multimedia skills. Besides, there will be some young volunteers trained as professional docents for the exhibition.”

The exhibition will showcase over 10,000 papier mâché eco-horse sculptures created by young people, and eight six-foot-tall horse sculptures created by 18 celebrities and local designers, including Xu Beihong’s wife Liao Jingwen and his son, Professor Xu Qingping; Ekin Cheng; Simon Yam; Sandra Ng and Michele Monique Reis.  Visitors will also have the chance to admire original works created by Master Xu as well as other large-scale horse animations produced by local students and cross-media artists.  For more details, please visit https://m21.hk/10000horses/exhibition.php.

Celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, the Club is extending its commitment to the development of young people by strategically focusing on ways to channel youth energy into social innovation. The Trust has been supporting HKFYG for almost half a century. Apart from this exhibition, the Club has funded the redevelopment of the HKFYG Jockey Club Sai Kung Outdoor Training Camp, the HKFYG Jockey Club Hong Kong International a cappella Festival and the establishment of the city’s first community-based, comprehensive new media hub M21.
