Jockey Club veterinarians and transport team ensure a smooth arrival for CAVALIA horses in Hong Kong

03/19/2015

To celebrate its 130th Anniversary, The Hong Kong Jockey Club is bringing CAVALIA to Hong Kong. A grand theatrical production, CAVALIA is an innovative mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects, which has been seen by millions across the world. CAVALIA’s White Big Top is already erected at Central Harbourfront, and with the support of the Club’s veterinarians and horse transport teams the CAVALIA horses arrived in Hong Kong last week. Today (19 March), after a few days of rest, the horses were presented at a press conference.

The CAVALIA horses arrived in two shipments, and were immediately transported in a convoy of Club vehicles to the CAVALIA stables at the White Big Top at Central Waterfront. Each convoy consisted of air-conditioned horse transport floats and a horse ambulance, a veterinary car and a maintenance car as precautionary measures.

The arrival of each shipment was overseen by the Club’s veterinary team, who were on hand to provide treatment should any horse need immediate attention. After arriving at the White Big Top, Club veterinarians checked each horse for any signs of fever or travel sickness. They also took blood tests and nasal swabs, as required by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department quarantine regulations.

During CAVALIA’s stay in Hong Kong, the horses will be primarily cared for by CAVALIA’s own grooms and veterinary nurses. In addition, 3-4 Club vets will be ‘on call’ 24 hours a day, to provide support as necessary. The Club’s world class Equine Hospital at Sha Tin Racecourse will also be available, should the need arise.

Artistic Director and Creator of CAVALIA Normand Latourelle said at the press conference that thanks to the professional support provided by the Club, the CAVALIA team could rest easy and focus all its attention on preparing the horses for the upcoming shows.

As the Presenting Sponsor of CAVALIA, and in the spirit of sharing its 130th Anniversary joy with Hong Kong, the Club is keen to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy this spectacular show. The Club is therefore providing tickets for 10,000 students and the less-privilleged to attend special matinee shows. It is also subsidising some categories of tickets for the general public.

The Club will be inviting different community organisations and educational institutes to join behind-the-scenes tours and acrobatic sessions, giving them a chance to interact with and learn from performing artists. CAVALIA artists also will share their skills at Sha Tin during the HKJC 130th Anniversary Community Festival from 3 to 5 April,
